STAFF CHANGES

Lance Sawyer, to First Baptist Church, Mena, Ark., as pastor, effective July 27. He comes from First Baptist Church, Muskogee, Okla., where he has served as pastor since 2004.

Ray Ammons, to First Baptist Church, Clinton, N.C., as pastor.

Zach Ashley, to Fairview at River Club, Fredericksburg, Va., as senior pastor. He comes from Mount Ararat Baptist Church, Stafford, Va., where he has served as associate pastor since 2005.

Hunter Duncan, to Churchland Baptist Church, Lexington, N.C., as pastor.

Rhonda Gailes, to Refuge Church, a new church start in Blowing Rock, N.C., as pastor.

Rodney Reeves, to First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Ark., as interim preacher, effective Aug. 31. He is dean of Christian studies at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.

Chester “Chet” Smith, now serving as interim pastor at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, Va.

Joe Noland, to Melbourne Heights Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky., as youth minister.

ORDINATION

Evan Rowe, ordained to ministry on May 18 by Midway (Ky.) Baptist Church, where he serves as minister of worship and youth. 

DEATHS

H. W. Walker Pipkin, 74, died June 29 in Greece, N.Y. A scholar of the Reformation, he had published numerous books and articles on Anabaptists and, most extensively, on the reformers Ulrich Zwingli and Balthasar Hubmaier. He taught in the U.S. and abroad, including the International Baptist Theological Seminary, then in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as senior pastor at the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy in Russia. He was predeceased by his first wife, Arlene Schenk Pipkin. He is survived by his second wife, Cheryl; daughters, Heather Martin and Nancy Pipkin-Hutchinson; step-daughter, Cindy Parnell; and two granddaughters.

F. Carson Riley III, 59, died May 30. He had served on the faculty of the Fredericksburg (Va.) Bible Institute and Seminary since 2006, teaching church history, Bible survey and worship courses. He was associate pastor at Round Oak Baptist Church, Woodford, Va., at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Dorriane Shelton Dennis Riley; son, Andrew; daughters, Catherine Porter and Paula Archie; stepdaughter, Christine Dennis; and 10 grandchildren.

John Finley, 20 years as senior pastor at First Baptist Church, Savannah, Ga.

Susan C. Batten-Bell, 10 years as minister of music at Bedford (Va.) Baptist Church.

Tim Dooley, 5 years as pastor of New Chapel Baptist Church, Rustburg, Va.

Pam Durso, 5 years as executive director of Baptist Women in Ministry, Atlanta, Ga.

Kelly Rhodes, 5 years as associate pastor at Edenton (N.C.) Baptist Church.
